My 2010 Season Lineup
August 17, 2010.
The big game draws were unexpectedly good to me this year. 2010 may end up being as good of a year as I've ever had.
New Mexico Antelope. I get to start the season early this year, with a late-August trip to hunt antelope bucks in northeastern New Mexico. The ranch I've been assigned to via New Mexico's "A-PLUS" program for opening up private lands to public hunters looks promising.
Wyoming Antelope. I drew a buck tag for the Red Desert of Wyoming, burning all my preference points. This is almost certainly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hunt this fabled area, so I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself to make the most of it.
Montana Antelope. Wow, I drew a lot of antelope tags this year. HTW pro-staffer Paul Vanderspek will make our first-ever hunt in Montana on a private ranch that he has access to. Should be a fun hunt.
In about 2 months, I'll be sitting on this
elk
meadow with a rifle in my hands....
Colorado Elk. I'll be hunting Colorado's 1st rifle elk season, hoping for a decent bull. You never know with elk, though. I took a brief scouting trip last week, and am cautiously optimistic. At the very least, it should be a beautiful time of year to be in the elk mountains.
Wyoming Mule Deer. HTW pro-staff Paul Vanderspek and I will team up again to hunt Wyoming's Unit 90 for public land mulies. Hoping for a nice one, but we don't know the area very well ..... should be interesting to figure out.
Nebraska Whitetails. I almost always hunt whitetails in Nebraska, but I usually skip opening weekend to try to beat the crowds. This year, I'm going to tough out the crowds to try to take advantage of unsuspecting opening-weekend bucks. This hunt tends to be very dependent on the progress of the rut and the corn harvest, so I never know what to expect.
Illinois Whitetails. I just added a last-minute whitetail gun hunt to the lineup, wanting something that would extend my season in to December. This is my only guided hunt of the year. Illinois is of course known for huge, corn-fed whitetails, but, as always, we'll have to see what happens....
All in all, that's a hell of a lineup for me. I have a lot to balance against it, including building a new house, taking care of 2 preschoolers, and finding a new home for an ailing father-in-law, but oh how I'm hoping for a good year.
