An Update on My 2010 Schedule
May 20, 2010.
So far, I have yet to draw a single big game tag for 2010.
My schedule is a lot better than that statement makes it sound, however. The following tags for Fall 2010 are pretty much "sure things", it's just that the appropirate draws haven't happened yet:
| September | Colorado turkey (over-the-counter) and mule deer doe (100% draw odds) |
| October | Colorado Antelope (96% draw odds, with my preference points) and puddle ducks |
| October | Montana Antelope (80% draw odds) |
| October | Colorado Elk (100% draw odds on a landowner voucher that I have dibs on) |
| November | South Dakota Black Hills whitetails (100% draw odds, with my preference points) |
| December | Nebraska muzzleloader whitetails (first-come, first-served) |
In addition, I have some yet-to-be-drawn applications in New Mexico and Wyoming that have odds that aren't too awful bad, ranging from about 1 in 15 to 1 in 3. I'm not counting on drawing those tags, but it's conceivable that I might get one.
It may not be a huge year for me, but it's not one I'd complain about either. And it's all fairly consistent with my overall plan for 2010, a year in which I'm trying to conserve money and time while trying to build a new house for my family. By staying close to home (Colorado), and by hunting sleeper states (South Dakota and Nebraska), and by hunting low-key species (antelope, fall turkey, and mulie does), I should get a lot of action without breaking the bank.
And, the story gets even better when you consider that in March, 2011, I'll be tagging along with a buddy while he tries to fill his New Mexico oryx/gemsbok tag. Then, in June, 2011, a group of four of us is finally heading to Prince of Wales island in Alaska for a spring bear hunt and fishing trip.
Once you throw in that off-season stuff, I've got a really fun 12 months ahead of me. But I still wish I could get at least one tag in my pocket to make me feel a little less antsy.
