Arizona Online License Sales Are Back — But Not Online Big Game Applications

February 26, 2010.

Arizona once had an online application system — and it always worked well for me — but suspended it during the middle of the 2007 application period for vague reasons related to "concerns [whether] its online service provider could adequately perform under its contract."

When Arizona had a working online system, hunters only needed to front the application fee when applying ($7.50 per species, plus a single $151 hunting license).

When they reverted to an antiquated paper-based system, hunters had to start fronting the full tag fee when applying. For hunters that apply for a fairly full range of Arizona species (deer, elk, antelope, sheep, bull bison), this means tying up an additional $8,172.50 at non-resident rates — not including the cost of the $151 non-resident license that is required to apply.

After years of frustration with Arizona's paper-based system, hunters got a ray of good news on February 23, 2010, when Arizona proudly announced "They’re back: Arizona hunting and fishing licenses are available online once again."

Unfortunately, this applies to strictly to license sales, NOT those $8,172.50 worth of limited-draw licenses that we really care about.

There is no projected date for when the online hunt draw process will be available online once again, although agency officials say they are actively working on the issue.

In the meantime, continue to save your pennies if you want to apply in Arizona.
