Bear Skin Rug

February 8, 2010.

I've been chipping away at packing up our house over the past couple weeks, and finally got to the bear skin rug that's been hanging in my stairway for the last 10 years.

I took the old gray-haired, worn-tooth sow back in 1999 on one of the very first guided hunts I ever took. I made the solo drive up to Lynn Lake, Manitoba over the course of two and a half days in my old Nissan, taking my 250-pound bear on the last night of the hunt.

After I took the rug down, I dusted her off and got a chance to admire her much more closely than I have in a long time, even though I've walked past her a dozen times every day for the last decade.

A bear skin rug is a great trophy, and hunting black bear is something that should be on every hunter's list of things to do at least once.

Here's a photo of the rug from the other day:

The felt has faded since 1999, but she's still in good shape overall.

And here's an old pre-digital photo of me when I took the bear, beardless and a little younger looking.
