My Nemesis, the Wild Turkey
September 29, 2010.
As I've noted before, I'm a lousy turkey hunter.
Over the course of my very unaccomplished turkey hunting career, I've held quite a few tags in Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas for both spring and fall seasons. For all the dozens of tags I've had, I have very, very little to show for it.
The latest tragic chapter in the story occurred last weekend during Colorado's fall season.
I was out doing some tree cutting when I finally got an incredibly lucky break.
4 young toms approached to within 35 yards of my parked truck. The fall season is currently open, and I had a turkey tag in my pocket.

They weren't spooked, so I had plenty of opportunity to crack open the back door of my truck and slip my 12 gauge out of its case.
Except that I had decided to leave my shotgun at home that day.
The turkeys eventually ended up 10 yards in front of me, right in front of my truck.

Looks like meatloaf for Thanksgiving this year....
