When Do Elk Shed Their Antlers?
April 5, 2010.
In Colorado's foothills, it's right around now - April 1st of every year.
I took this photo a couple doors down from my house on the morning of March 30th. One large-bodied bull had dropped his antlers and was sporting velvet knobs. Another was still carrying both horns.
Two days later, on April 1, I saw 3 large bulls in velvet, feeding in the cloverleaf where Colorado's Highways 285 and C-470 meet at the base of the foothills.
