Colorado Sheep and Mountain Goat Applications Available

February 10, 2010.

If you've applied in the past for Colorado sheep and goat, you've probably gotten your 2010 regulations in the mail by now. If you don't apply in Colorado, you need to start — sheep and goat hunting opportunities in Colorado are excellent.

The regulations incorporate some of the key changes we had told you about in our January 19th update, including:

New Unit for Desert Bighorn Ram Licenses:
Unit S63 (Middle Dolores River) is now open for resident rifle hunters, but it's combined with S64.

Desert Bighorn Hunting Now Open to Nonresidents:
For the first time ever, a nonresident desert bighorn ram license will be offered in Colorado. The nonresident license will be available in unit S56 (Black Ridge). Note that you cannot apply for both desert and rocky mountain bighorns; you must pick one. When you apply for desert sheep in Colorado, your weighted points don't count — and you also don't accumulate one when you don't draw.

Bighorn Sheep Ewe Licenses:
Ewe licenses are available in units S57 (Big Thompson) and S15, S16, S21, S28, S33 and S53 (San Juan Mountains).

Bighorn Sheep Ram Licenses:
Units S39 (Mt. Silverheels) and S41 (Peru Creek) are open for rifle hunters (resident only)

Female-Only Goat Licenses:
For the first time ever, female-only (nanny) goat licenses are now available in units G15 and G16. In other states that offer nanny-only licenses (Utah), the draw odds are usually quite good. Several licenses are available for residents, but only 1 for nonresidents.

Applications are due April 6.

Rocky Mountain Bighorns and Mountain Goat are $1,819 for nonresidents. Desert Sheep are "only" $1,214 for nonresidents.

Get your copy of the regs online, then apply at http://wildlife.state.co.us/ShopDOW/AppsAndLicenses/.

Draw results are expected to start coming out on April 28.
