A Record Book Elk .... From Minnesota?

December 29, 2010.

On December 12 — the last morning of Minnesota’s muzzleloader deer season — a group of deer hunters spotted a massive bull elk who had apparently tripped while jumping a fence and became stuck on his back with his antlers embedded in the mud.

These anonymous photos of the bull have been circulating on the internet:

They freed the bull, then one of them kept an eye on it over the next couple of days. The bull died of age, cold, and injuries from its encounter with the fence.

The hunter who found the dying bull was allowed to keep the antlers, which green-scored a stunning 456 4/8". Minnesota is apparently the land of giant bulls. Who knew?

For the complete story, see the Grand Forks Herald.
