Montana Bison Season May Be A Flop

January 21, 2010.

For the second year in a row, the Montana bison season is shaping up to be a non-event. Mild weather is allowing the bison to stay in Yellowstone Park, where hunting is not allowed.

Montana's 2009-2010 bison season offered 44 either-sex tags and is divided into 3 splits:

  • November 15 - December 31
  • January 1 -22
  • January 23 - February 15

With the 1st split over and the 2nd split coming to an end, only 1 bison has been shot. That bison was taken in the West Yellowstone area.

With the final split ahead, prospects do not look good for hunters.

"There has been no significant weather to make forage unavailable and cause bison to migrate," says a Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks representative.

"Reports still indicate that there are a very small number of bison out in the West Yellowstone area. There are currently no repots of bison out in the West Gardiner area."

In addition to bull tags, Montana maintains a cow/calf roster and calls hunters on that list when hunting opportunities become available. No hunters have been called from the cow/calf list. Up to 46 cow/calf tags may be issued in West Yellowstone and up to 54 cow/calf tags may be issued in the Gardiner area.

During last year's 2008-2009 bison season, only a single bison was harvested by a hunter.
