Montana Bighorn SuperTag Winner Busted For Illegal Hunting
April 19, 2010.
Shawn Hall, 33, of Billings, MT has been sentenced for making a false statement and hunting without landowner permission in a 2008 bighorn sheep hunting case.
Hall won the bighorn sheep permit in the state’s 2008 SuperTag Lottery and took a 9 1/2-year-old ram in the famous Missouri Breaks. Afterward, he gave Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks a false harvest location that was in an area seven miles from the true location of the kill.
The ram was actually taken in an area not accessible to hunting without landowner permission. Afterward, Hall and his group packed the animal out to their all-terrain vehicles across the private land, again without permission.
Hall was fined $720 - virtually nothing considering a sheep tag in this area auctions every year for around $100,000. Hall was sentenced to 180 days in jail with all but one day suspended with credit for time served, and forfeited his privileges to hunt, fish and trap in Montana for a brief two years. In addition, Hall lost the privilege to apply for any additional special hunting permits.
I assume they didn't let him keep the sheep, but I'm not positive.
