Multiple Application Deadlines Approach
April 29, 2010.
As the end of April approaches, so do application deadlines in Idaho, Kansas, and Montana.
Idaho
Idaho applications for sheep, goat, and moose are due April 30. You are only allowed to apply for 1 of these 3 species. The license fee must be submitted in full ($2,101.75), although it will be refunded to your credit card if you are not drawn. Purchase of a hunting license is required -- at $154.74-- and this fee is not refunded if you are not drawn. Although the non-refundable license fee is painful, Idaho is still attractive due to its relatively high draw odds.

Kansas
Kansas non-resident deer applications are due on April 30. The draw odds should be 100% if you're after a whitetail tag, but only about 1 in 3 if you're trying to apply for the "Mule Deer Stamp" that turns you're whitetail tag in to an either-species tag. See our April 9th rant (http://www.huntthewest.com/2010/KStags.php) for more information.
2010 Kansas regulations are still not published, but you can check out last year's info at http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/Hunting/Hunting-Regulations/Deer

Montana
Montana sheep, goat, and moose applications are due May 1.
Full fees are required up front, and you're allowed to apply for all three species at $755 a pop. If you apply, you will almost certainly want to throw in another $20 to participate in the bonus point system -- that single $20 fee will get you a bonus point for all 3 species, if you apply for all 3.

My Plan
I'm really attracted to the hunting opportunities in all 3 of these states. But as I'm focused on saving for a new house right now, I can't afford to tie up $4,000+ in Idaho and Montana. And I'm too frustrated with the Kansas mule deer license allocation system to apply there, especially when so many other states have more attractive systems.
So, I'm passing on all 3 of these states this year.
Probably back in the game in 2011, though.
