Nebraska Firearms Deer Season Opens Saturday

November 10, 2010.

My nextdoor neighbor, a very accomplished bowhunter, just got back from a week of bowhunting in southwest Nebraska.

Here's what he had to tell me, based on his week in the field:

"You should hit the rut and weather just perfect when you go out – all of the crops are out, rut is starting a little later and the weather is going be cool.  Gun hunters are going to clean up this year."

Ooooh, please let it be so. I'll be out there on opening day of the November 13-21 season, and would love to get a respectable whitetail.

According to Nebraska Game and Parks, the following November firearm permits are available, as of November 4: Buffalo Whitetail, 510; Calamus East, 606; Calamus West, 960; Frenchman Whitetail, 1,202; Keya Paha, 1,246; Loup West, 543; Pine Ridge, 1,346; Plains, 672; Platte Whitetail, 958; Sandhills, 991; Upper Platte, 592; and Wahoo, 128.

Thousands of Season Choice Area antlerless deer permits also remain, most with bonus tags.

Good luck to all the Nebraska deer hunters out there....
