Outfitter Update: New Mexico Barbary Sheep with Cedar Creek Outfitters

January 5, 2010.

Back in February of 2007, I made the trip down to Roswell, New Mexico for a free-range barbary sheep hunt (Barbary sheep are also known as Aoudad over in their Texas range).  I went in to that hunt thinking of it as a tune-up for an upcoming Dall Sheep hunt that I was very heavily focused on, but quickly found that hunting big barbary sheep rams in New Mexico is a tremendous destination in and of itself.  And the tags are over-the-counter!

I hope to return to hunt them again in the near future, and have kept in touch with a lot of other barbary sheep hunters since I was last down there.

Just recently, I checked in with Chris Flanagan, who I had hunted with in 2007.

Chris is now guiding for Bobby Hines' Cedar Creek Outfitters of Logan, NM, and shared prospects for their upcoming February, 2010 sheep season.  Cedar Creek Outfitters offers a full range of hunts for New Mexico's trophy elk, deer, and antelope, along with very popular turkey hunts in the spring — but Chris's passion is barbary sheep.

"This will be my 22nd year of barbary sheep hunting coming up," says Chris, his dedication to sheep hunting clear in his voice when he talks about them.

"We can't wait for the season to get here in February.  We'll be focusing our barbary sheep hunts on a new 32,000-acre lease that has some great rams."

Scouting photos taken this past Thanksgiving on Cedar Creek Outfitters' New Mexico barbary sheep lease help explain Chris's excitement.  Their hunters are going to have a crack at some excellent rams this year:

"And as good as this year is shaping up to be, we think the 2010/2011 season will be even better," notes Chris. "We've got another 50,000 acres of leases pending for next year."

"As we continue to build long-term relations with the landowners and manage those properties for trophy quality, our hunting should just keep getting better and better — for sheep and also for our deer, elk, and antelope."
