Time to Apply in Utah

February 10, 2010.

Utah is currently accepting big game applications, with a deadline of March 1st at 11pm MT.

Utah has a wide range of world-class opportunity, including desert sheep, rocky mountain bighorns, mountain goat, moose, antelope, mule deer, bison, and elk. A great example of Utah's potential is the new world record elk taken during the 2008 season.

Regulation changes that occurred back in 2009 made applying in Utah more tempting than ever.

Historically, nonresidents were allowed to apply for one "once-in-a-lifetime" species (desert sheep, rocky mountain bighorn, goat, bison, moose) and either deer, elk, or pronghorn.

Starting in 2009, Utah allowed nonresidents apply for and accumulate bonus points towards all species.

To get a shot at a Utah tag, you have to pay a nonrefundable $65 license fee, then another $10 per species. If you throw down your $145, you get a chance at drawing tags for 8 different species.

Utah has a bonus points system, and it's been in place for over 15 years. There are a lot of guys with more points than you, so drawing a high-end tag in Utah is far from easy. For details on bonus point counts, see UDWR's website.

But while the odds of drawing a good tag in Utah in any given year are pretty unrealistic, you do get to build points towards a tag down the road and you always have that slim chance of drawing. For $145, it's a lot of opportunity, and I always apply in Utah.

Go to the website of the Utah Division of Wildlife resources to get your copy of the application booklet.

For a summary of key changes for 2010, see our January 5th update.

Applications are accepted between February 1st and March 1st. Applications are accepted online and by phone -- Utah does not support a paper application process (Arizona take note!).

You can apply for a bonus or preference point through March 8th.

Expect results of the drawings to be available a couple days before April 29.

I have submitted my eight apps in Utah, all for world-class hunts with really long odds. I'll keep track of my applications (and all the subsequent rejections) on the Hunt The West homepage.
