2010 Utah Applications Available
January 5, 2010.
Applications for Utah's 2010 big game season are now available on the website of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Utah offers outstanding but hard-to-draw tags for bighorns, desert sheep, goats, bison, moose, mulies, elk, and pronghorns.
Key changes include:
- Five-day rifle deer hunt statewide: In 2010, the general any legal weapon (rifle) deer hunt will be shortened to five days in most areas.
- Three-day rifle deer hunt on five units: There are a few hunting units where the general any legal weapon (rifle) deer season will be three days. In 2010, the hunting season will last from Oct. 23–Oct. 25 on the following units: Cache, Ogden, Oquirrh-Stansbury, Monroe and South Slope (Vernal).
- Return to statewide archery: In 2010,
archery hunters will not have to pick a region before heading into the field. If you obtain a general archery buck deer permit, you can hunt open units statewide. - Slightly shorter spike bull season: This year, the archery spike bull elk hunt will be two days shorter than last year, running from Aug. 21–Sept. 10. This will allow hunters who draw limited-entry archery elk permits to hunt without interference from spike hunters for a full seven days.
- Four new bighorn sheep hunts: In 2010, you can apply to hunt bighorn sheep in four new areas: North Slope, Three Corners Goslin; Box Elder, Pilot Mountain; Stansbury and Zion. For more information, see the hunt tables that begin on page 47.
- New muzzleloader pronghorn hunt: This year, there will be a muzzleloader pronghorn hunt.
- New boundary for pronghorn unit: The boundary of the San Rafael pronghorn unit has expanded to include the Henry Mountains unit.
Remember, as of 2008 you have to buy a hunting license before you can apply in Utah. Previously, you could apply in Utah for a bargain rate of $5 per application. In 2010, you'll have to purchase a $65 non-refundable non-resident hunting license ($26 for residents) before you can apply.
The application periods are later than in previous years.
Apply online through http://wildlife.utah.gov. Applications are accepted between February 1st and March 1st. Applications are accepted online and by phone -- Utah does not support a paper application process (Arizona take note!).
You can apply for a bonus or preference point through March 8th.
Draw results will be available by April 29th.
Go to the website of the Utah Division of Wildlife resources to get your copy of the application booklet.
