Time to Apply for Wyoming Bison

February 8, 2010.

Wyoming is one of a handful of western states and Canandian provinces that offers hunts for wild, free-ranging bison. I was fortunate enough to draw this once-in-a-lifetime tag back in 2005, and highly recommend the hunt.

You can apply online at
https://gf.state.wy.us/elsapplication/ELSWelcome.aspx. To apply is only $20 for a non-resident.

Applications are due February 28.

I recommend applying for bulls instead of cows — they're more interesting representatives of this iconic species, and the success rate on cows tends to be low, since they stay on National Park grounds where hunting is not allowed.

In May, Wyoming Game and Fish will conduct a drawing and assign applicants a "priority number." You'll get a letter in May notifying you of your number. If you're a nonresident and have a number between 1 and 25, get excited -- this sort of number should allow you to head up to Jackson, WY and buy your license when the season opens in the fall.

The licenses are not cheap — $2,502 for a non-resident bull license — but the hunt is an incredible experience and the quality of the animals is excellent.
