Wyoming Still The Weak Link in Wolf Management

August 17, 2010.

On August 6th, a federal judge ruled that the northern rockies wolf population was still subject to protection under the Endangered Species Act, effectively ending the successul wolf management program in Idaho and Montana. (More details)

The key factor in his ruling was the lack of an approved management plan in Wyoming, where wolves would largely be subject to shoot-on-sight management.

In statements made on the wednesday following the ruling, Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal remained steadfast in his unwillingness to create a wolf management program similar to those in Idaho and Montana:

“I don’t want to spend any state money on it. Let the feds do it. Why should I pay state money to be a toady to the federal government?”

While we may or may not agree with Freudenthal's underlying philosophical position the fact remains: Wolves will not be managed until Wyoming adopts a measured wolf hunt policy similar to those in Idaho and Montana.

Hopefully Freudenthal is giving more level-headed marching orders to his wildlife management team behind the scenes of his public rhetoric.
