Grizzly Kills 70-Year-Old After Being Fitted With Radio Collar

June 22, 2010.

After being trapped, tranquilized, and fitted with a radio collar on thursday morning, an adult male grizzly killed a 70-year-old hiker later that afternoon, a few miles east of Yellowstone Park.

The victim, Erwin Frank Evert, of Park Ridge, IL, was found dead at the capture site. Evert ignored warning signs posted advising hikers to avoid the area because of the likelihood of a dangerous bear encounter.

Evert, a research field botanist, had spent summers in the area for 30 years, and knew the risk he was taking by ignoring the warnings.

“He was an extraordinary man who made a very ordinary mistake,” said a colleague of Evert's.

The bear was located via his tracking collar and killed on Saturday, 2 days after the attack.
