My 2011 Lineup
August 18, 2011.
My 2011 lineup has fallen in to place. I've got some good hunts on the agenda, although it's a little lighter than I usually like.
The good news there, I guess, is that I'll have more time for duck hunting in October (very fun) and maybe some goose hunting during the winter months.
August — Wyoming muzzleloader antelope
One week from now, I'll be hunting antelope in a remote unit during an early-season muzzleloader-only hunt, along with good friends Virgil Mathias and Paul Vanderspek. There are supposedly some good bucks in the unit, although getting to within muzzleloader range may be a little tricky. Should be a lot of fun.
September — Colorado muzzleloader elk
I'll once again be putting my claim to being Colorado's Worst Elk Hunter on the line as I hunt a unit that I've hunted twice before, once during rifle season and once during the muzzleloader season. I'll need a lot of luck on this one, especially since I'm not in great shape.
October — Colorado rifle antelope
This is probably the hunt I'm most excited about this year. I've booked a high-end private land hunt with High Plains Outfitters, and the scouting photos they've been sending me make it look like they'll be able to continue their already impressive track record on seriously big Colorado pronghorns. I'll take my .257 Weatherby along for this ride.
December — North Dakota rifle mule deer hunt
I have this thing about hunting mulies in somewhat obscure areas. The state of North Dakota doesn't let non-residents hunt mulies with a rifle, but the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation does. Should be fun to figure out this area, although I'm not expecting a monster. It will be good to spend time on the high plains with my .300 Win Mag again.
...And that's about it. My Arizona mulie hunt fell through (didn't draw), and my Nebraska mule deer hunt looks like it will have fallen through too (didn't get the private land access I had been trying to line up).
Duck hunting will fill the gaps, as will visions of ibex hunting -- I'm already strangely focused on my goal of an ibex hunt in 2013, and have been working out about 5 times per week towards that goal. Should have that 30 pounds dropped by fall, 2013.
Best of luck to you all on your fall hunts.
