My 2011 Mid-Season Update

2011 has been good to me so far, and there's even more opportunity ahead than I had originally expected.

Wyoming Antelope

My season started in August with an early season muzzleloader hunt for speed goats. The buck I took came in at 71 4/8" (which would make the muzzleloading record books, for what it's worth). It also stocked my freezer and took care of the itchiness of my trigger finger.

Colorado Elk

This hunt was so uneventful that I forgot to include it in my first draft of this update. I got some good exercise hiking in the mountains of Colorado, but never came close to seeing an elk.

Colorado Antelope

This buck was my 20th career antelope, and my best except for the Red Desert buck I shot in Wyoming last year. The hunting offered on this guided hunt was impressive, and I've already booked a return trip for 2012.

Colorado Deer

This one, I hadn't originally seen coming. After cruising Craigslist for a couple weeks, I broke down and picked up a landowner voucher for a deer tag on the eastern plains of Colorado. If the corn harvest continues on its current pace, I might have a chance at some really nice Colorado whitetails in late October. Here's one of several scouting photos from the landowner:

Dakotas Deer

I unexpectedly drew tags on not one but two Indian reservations in the Dakotas. There are big deer up there — both mulies and whitetails — but I'll be spread a little thin running around trying to fill two tags. Hopefully I'll get at least one nice deer out of the trip. Barring worst-case weather, it should be a great trip.

After That ...

I had been toying with the idea of attending the SHOT Show in January, but my deer season has been pretty heavily loaded, and I should probably stay home with the family instead.

I will try to get some duck and goose hunting in, though, especially with memories of last year's awesome hunting still fresh in my memory.

And I'm still doing research and getting in shape for the 2013 ibex hunt I've set as a goal....
