New Rifle Project: 6mm Remington on a Mauser 98 Action (Part 4)
September 9, 2011.
My initial testing of my Mauser 98 in 6mm Remington did not yield impressive accuracy -- I got about a 4-inch group at 100 yards with Federal Premium 100-grain Nosler Partitions.
This is good ammo and a good bullet. If this didn't shoot well, I figured I might be in serious trouble.
After these initial disappointing results, I called up Larry at Superior Ammunition and asked him to load me up a sample pack with Hornady GMX 80-grain bullets and Barnes 85-grain TSXs. I shoot TSXs almost exclusively, both because they're non-toxic and because they shoot better in my rifles than any other bullet.
The Hornady GMX is also non-toxic, and I've seen a buddy get excellent accuracy results with it as well.
When the sample pack arrived and I got a chance to head back to the range, I started with the 2 GMX loads Larry had sent me. These yielded about 2-inch groups -- much better than what the Federal Premium load had given me, but still not what I was hoping for.
The TSXs, as always, came through for me.
I got this 4-shot group with one TSX load:

And this 4-shot group with another TSX load:

It's the second group that really intrigues me. The 3 shots touching are very compelling to me. Unfortunately, I really don't have an explanation for that one flyer.
I'm consulting with Larry on the next step, so I may have one more post on this.
The good news, though, is that with a little more fine-tuning, this gun does indeed seem capable of getting me in the 1MOA range of accuracy, much to my relief.
I'll continue fine-tuning this fall. Next year, maybe it will join me for antelope or whitetails....
