Miracles Do Happen: Arizona Gets An Online Application System

October 11, 2011.

After years of being the only western state without an online application system, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has finally announced that an online application service for Arizona’s 2012 hunts became available beginning on October 4, 2011.

Arizona once had an online application system — and it always worked great for me — but suspended it during the middle of the 2007 application period for vague reasons related to "concerns [whether] its online service provider could adequately perform under its contract."

With the new system, you will have to pay a non-refundable application fee of $7.50 per applicant, along with the fee for any necessary licenses (a 2012 license is required to enter the 2012 draw).

The cost of the hunt permit-tag won’t be charged unless and until you are drawn. This is a huge change — you no longer have to front $1,400 to apply for sheep, $600 to apply for elk, $500 to apply for pronghorn, etc. This will make it much less painful to apply in Arizona. Which means that more people will apply, and draw odds will be tougher....

Hunters who haven’t yet submitted an application for the spring 2012 hunts for turkey, javelina, buffalo, and bear will be able to apply online by Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 by 7 p.m. (MST). Department officials advise online applicants to apply early and not wait until the last minute, in case any technical issues arise on deadline day.
