Colorado Duck Opener

Duck hunting in Colorado's northeast region opened for the 2011-2012 season this past Saturday.

I was in the field for opening day, which proved to be wet, windy, and duckless. Hunting the potholes where I like to hunt ducks works much better in dry conditions, where it's easy to move from stock pond to stock pond, locate ducks through glassing, and then plan and execute a stalk.

Water levels are fairly low, leaving many normally productive ponds dry. And the bulk of ducks do not appear to be down from up north yet.

HTW pro-staff Paul Vanderspek explored several Colorado Walk-In areas in eastern Colorado on sunday, and had similarly poor results.

So, if you missed the duck opener in Colorado this year, you probably didn't miss much.
