Field Report: Colorado Muzzleloader Elk Season
September 19, 2011.
I just spent several days hunting Colorado's muzzleloader elk season and had my usual really bad results.
The bulls weren't bugling, and neither myself or any of the other hunters I saw could figure out where the elk were. I was hunting a unit that I had hunted a couple times before, so should have had a reasonable chance of getting in to elk ... but it didn't pan out.
I've been looking back over my Colorado elk hunting career, and it's not a pretty picture. I'm 2 for 2 on late season Ranching For Wildlife tags that I've drawn. But I'm 0 for 8 on the rest of my elk tags.
I think I'm going to take the hint and just focus on late season cow hunts, because I do enjoy the meat. I'll leave the Colorado bulls to all the guys (and there's plenty of them) who are better elk hunters than me.
On a side note, if you have a 1st Rifle Season tag for Colorado Unit 48, drop me a line, I have some interesting scouting info that I got from a backpacker I ran in to.
