Update on New Mexico Big Game Changes

August 1, 2011.

On Thursday, July 21, the New Mexico State Game Commission approved more components of the plan requried to implement SB196, which significantly reduces non-resident hunting opportunity in New Mexcio.

One of the SB196 changes was to require hunters to purchase a general hunting license when applying for hunts. Before New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez agreed to sign the bill, she negotiated an agreement that hunting license fees ($15 for residents and $65 for nonresidents) would be refunded to unsuccessful hunters.

The Commission formally passed the refund provision at the July 21 meeting, a nice break for those of us who apply in New Mexico.

An additional impact of the hunting license purchase requirement will be to move the oryx drawing from March to June to align the oryx application/license purchase/refund process with the rest of the big game application/license purchase/refund processes.
