New Auction and Raffle Tags in Arizona?

January 17, 2012.

The Arizona legislature has been considering a bill (HB2072) that would offer a significant number of tags for auction and raffle.

Arizona is known for its trophy-quality game, and the tags would be likely to generate significant revenues which would be used for conservation projects. Arizona is also known as a state where it's tough to draw a tag, and this measure would make it even tougher by removing tags from the draw.

The Arizona Game and Fish Commission has come out against the bill, voting 5-0 to oppose it at their January 10th meeting. They noted, "our opposition is not just to the bill as written, but to the entire concept of removing or adding any big game tags from the pool of big game tags available for the general public and transferring them to any private organization.”

Public opposition to the bill seems strong as well.

Personally, I think auction and raffle tags can be implemented in such a way as to generate important revenues for wildlife and to create another venue for getting a tag. I typically enter several tag raffles a year. But, the current proposal in Arizona seems to set aside too many tags in a state where opportunity is already too thin.

A vote on the bill has not been scheduled, and it seems to be floundering in the face of public opposition.
