Mountain Goat

2005 British Columbia billy

I've had a thing for mountain goats ever since the first time I saw one, little more than a white speck on the alpine high, high above me near Georgetown, Colorado. Since then I've been obsessively applying for tags to hunt them, and have been lucky enough to do so twice.

Goats, largely because of the extremely remote places they live, are not widely understood or hunted. It's hard to learn about them. The two best books on the subject are:

  • Hunt High by Duncan Gilchrist. Gilchrist, recently deceased, was a long-time hunting guide in Alaska. The book also contain chapters on sheep and New Zealand mountain game.
  • A Beast the Color of Winter: The Mountain Goat Observed by Douglas Chadwick. Although this isn't specifically a hunting book, it does have excellent natural history and behavioral information about mountain goats.
