Colorado Mulie Rut Still in Full Swing
November 24, 2008.
The mule deer rut near my home in the foothills above Denver (elevation 7200 feet) has been in full swing for about a week now.
Mature bucks have come out of the woodwork. They started cruising for does about two weeks ago, and have been tending herds of does for a solid week.
Last year, I saw two enormous bucks challenging each other in the middle of my road about this time of year. This year, I have not seen (or heard) bucks sparring yet. In fact, I saw a large 3-point allow a yearling buck to wander within feet of a doe he was tending last night.
The weather in Colorado remains unseasonably warm (I wore t-shirts outside both saturday and sunday), but the mule deer do seem to be moving forward with the rut regardless.
