Field Report: Colorado Bulls Still Carrying Horns, Bucks in Velvet
April 28, 2008.
With about 100 days to go until my Alaska sheep hunt, I headed to the mountain park near my home in the Denver foothills to get in a 7 mile loop with a 40-pound pack both days this weekend.
On saturday, during a late spring snow squall, I passed 3 spikes and a 5x5 raghorn. All 4 elk still carried their antlers.
On sunday, I got a close enough look at one of the many groups of mule deer I passed to spot velvet antlers on a buck that was with a group of does and yearlings. They were short and fat, about 5 inches long.
