Update: Second Split of 2007 Montana Bison Hunt Ends

January 30, 2008.

The second split of the 2007 Montana bison season has ended, and the third and final split has begun. The 2nd split ran from January 1 - 22; the 3rd split is running from January 23 - February 15.

There are two hunting districts, one north of Yellowstone National Park (HD385) and one west of the Park (HD395).

Mandatory harvest reporting is not required in Montana, but some harvest estimates are available from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

As of January 23, MFWP is reporting "no bison" currently in HD385, where only 9 bison have been taken by state and tribal hunters for both the 1st and 2nd split.

"More than 200 bison" are currently reported in HD395. MFWP reports 62 bison taken by state and tribal hunters for both the 1st and 2nd split.

In addition to the either-sex permits already issued, MFWP is hoping to issue up to 100 cow/calf tags "depending upon bison migration into individual hunting districts." 14 of these permits were issued in HD395 on January 3rd for the 2nd split. 14 more were issued in HD395 on January 23 for the 3rd split. No cow/calf tags have been issued in HD385.

An FWP information line, at 406-994-5700 (option 5), has been set up to advise hunters of bison movement on to huntable public lands.

Montana, along with Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, and South Dakota, offers one of the very few state hunts for wild bison. (Wyoming is where I took my bull in 2005).
