Montana May Extend 2008 Elk Season
November 24, 2008.
With a warm fall keeping elk high in the mountains and out of hunters’ sights, Montana wildlife officials are considering extending this year’s elk-hunting season.
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks will decide before Thanksgiving whether the season should be extended into December.
Any extension would have to be approved by the FWP commission in Helena.
The general elk season opened October 26 and is scheduled to close November 30.
So far this year, the number of bull elk shot by hunters is half of what it has been in recent years — years that were also considered slow. Antler-less numbers are comparable to the past three years.
