Firearms Maker Ousted For Exercising Basic Freedoms
November 3, 2008.
Montana riflemaker and hunter Dan Cooper has been ousted as chief executive of the rifle company that bears his name, Cooper Firearms.
After Mr. Cooper exercised his fundamental democratic freedom to support the candidate of his choice in the upcoming presidential election, an internet campaign was launched to attack him. Concerned by a threatened boycott of their products, Cooper's board of directors spinelessly caved in to their fears and asked their friend and founder to step down.
In a statement to USA TODAY, Mr. Cooper said, "There is nothing on this earth I will not do for my employees … we have fought through 20 years of building what I believe to be the finest rifles built in America …When the internet anger turned on these innocent people, I felt it was important to distance myself from the company so as not to cause any further harm."
To say the least, it is unfortunate that this sort of economic McCarthyism and intimidation would be targeted against one of our fellow hunters simply because he exercised his basic right to participate in the democratic process and vote for the candidate of his choice.
