Latest Updates on Hunt The West

Field Report: Eastern Colorado Ducks

November 19, 2009.

Yesterday, on the way home from deer hunting in Nebraska, I stopped to check out a few duck ponds that had been productive earlier in the year.

Most of the ponds were frozen over, and when I did find a little open water, it was empty.

This is similar to what I saw while deer hunting near Ogallala, NE .... no ducks or geese up there either.

HTW pro-staffer Paul Vanderspek hunted an eastern Colorado State Wildlife Area yesterday and had a similar experience: iced-up ponds, no birds, and very little shooting from surrounding ponds.

I suppose it could pick back up with migrating ducks from up north, but I'm probably done duck hunting for the year.
