Idaho Man Injures Hand When Shotgun Explodes

December 31, 2009.

A Bellevue, Idaho man has been discharged from a Spokane hospital after seriously injuring his hand in a hunting accident on Christmas Day.

46-year-old Shawn Crea was bird hunting with some companions when he fired his shotgun. The gun exploded, severely injuring his left hand.

None of Crea’s companions were in the immediate vicinity, but his cries were heard by nearby hunters Andy Terhaar and Greg Adams who called 911 for assistance.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion continues. Initial information indicates an improperly hand-loaded shell may have been the cause.

Crea was shooting a Remington Model 11, a version of the Browning A-5 produced under license in the United States. Some 850,000 Remington Model 11 shotguns were produced before production ended in 1947.
