Down and Out in Nebraska

November 24, 2009.

When Nebraska's firearm deer season opened on November 14, hunters encountered healthy numbers of mature bucks but lots of standing corn for deer to hide in.

The bucks wised-up quickly, and holed up in the corn once they knew they were being hunted.

I did not hunt opening weekend, but heard that a couple nice bucks were taken off the farm I was hunting in western NE. By the time I was in the field on tuesday, deer sightings were down considerably.

By closing weekend (November 21-22), deer numbers were way down in the woods. I saw few does mid-week, and a lonely, nervous-looking little 3x3 on sunday morning. Other than that, I was skunked pretty bad for my 2009 Nebraska Firearms season.

For those hunting the month-long Nebraska muzzleloader season in December, there should still be plenty of deer left in the woods. The corn should be down by then, and hunting prospects should be re-charged. I'll be on the sidelines for that season, however.
