2009 Nevada Big Game Applications Available
March 19, 2009.
Nevada's big game application booklets are now available on the website of the Nevada Division of Wildlife.
Nevada offers a very wide variety of western big game, including mule deer, elk, antelope, desert sheep, rocky mountain bighorns, california bighorns, and mountain goat.
To apply and build bonus points, you'll need to fork over $142 for a non-refundable non-resident hunting license. This will get you in on the Vegas-like bonus point system, where Nevada squares your bonus points to calculate the number of extra chances you get in the draw.
Once you pay the $142, applications for individual species are affordable — you do not have to front tag fees.
Some of the key changes for 2009 include:
- For mountain goat, the number of hunter choice numbers has been raised from one to up to five.
- You are now allowed to apply for a buck antelope tag if you did not harvest a buck in the last 5 years. Previously, you couldn't apply for a buck tag if you had had a buck tag in the last 5 years, regardless of whether you filled the tag. This one will help me -- I drew a tag a couple years ago but passed on all the bucks I saw.
- If you received a sheep tag in the last 10 years, you cannot apply again for that subspecies. Previously, you couldn't apply if you received a tag in the last 5 years or killed that subspecies in the last 10 years.
- If you drew a mountain goat tag in the last 10 years, you cannot apply this year. Previously, this had been treated as a once-in-a-lifetime tag.
Application deadline is April 20.
Draw results will be available June 19.
