Wyoming 2009 Bison Hunt Results

December 29, 2009.

The number of wild Wyoming bison killed by hunters is down 54 percent this year, prompting wildlife managers to worry that the herd will grow for the first time in three years.

As of December 21, bison hunters had killed only 91 in Bridger-Teton National Forest and the National Elk Refuge. They had harvested 198 bison by the same time last year, Wyoming Game and Fish Department spokesman Mark Gocke said.

Gocke said mild weather and lots of forage have kept animals from migrating down to the refuge. With the season ending in a few days, there’s little chance hunters will make significant gains.

The season included some drama, including the goring of a guide by a wounded bull after his client wounded it with a handgun. (See our October 5th update).

While the season may have been slow compared to previous years, some great bulls were taken by hunters who stuck with it, including a great bull by HTW subscriber Marty Liesegang of Oregon. Read more about Marty's hunt in the South County Spotlight.
