Time to Apply for Wyoming's Sheep, Goat, Moose, and Bison

February 23, 2009.

The deadline for applying for Wyoming's Sheep, Mountain Goat, Moose, and Bison is February 28. Since the 28th falls on a Saturday, Wyoming Game and Fish will accept applications up until Monday, March 2.

These are premier tags, with tough draw odds and steep prices.

To apply for Wyoming's Bighorn Sheep, you'll need to front $2,266.00. This includes a nonrefundable $14 application fee and a nonrefundable $100 preference point. Draw odds vary by unit but are in the neighborhood of 1 in 50 to 1 in 200.

To apply for Wyoming's Mountain Goats, you'll need to front $2,166.00. This includes a nonrefundable $14 application fee (there is no preference point system in place for goats in Wyoming). Draw odds vary by unit but are in the neighborhood of 1 in 50 to 1 in 100.

To apply for Wyoming's Moose, you'll need to front $1,416.00. This includes a nonrefundable $14 application fee and a nonrefundable $75 preference point. Draw odds vary by unit but are in the neighborhood of 1 in 50 to 1 in 200 for top units.

Bison are different. It will only cost you $20 to apply, but a whopping $2,502 if you are drawn. Wyoming wild bison are a tremendous hunting opportunity. See our 2008 Bison Season Recap for more info.

If you'd like to apply for only preference points for sheep and moose, the preference point application period is July 1 - September 30.

You can pick up the nonresident application booklet here.

You can submit your application here.

The drawing for sheep, goats, and moose is May 1, with results available a few days later. The bison draw is May 15.

Personally, I'll build points for moose and pass on goats. My cash flow can't sustain that many pricey live applications this year. I am going to bite the bullet on sheep, however, having become a little obsessed with sheep hunting.

I'm not eligible to apply for bison, having taken one in 2005, but would apply in a heartbeat if I was allowed to.

You can keep track of my apps (and the corresponding rejections) on the HTW homepage.
